Martha- A Journey of Giving and Discipleship

"While they were traveling, He entered a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home."                                                                 Luke 10:38 One of the things that I love about the Bible is that it is just real and always true. Sadly, too often, we can form opinions about people in the Bible that are not fully accurate. Martha is one of those people. All my adult life spent in Bible studies I always heard the same thing: "be like Mary; don't be like Martha". Because of this, I feel like Martha gets a bad rap. Now admittedly, by nature, I lean towards Martha's tendencies. I am a doer. I love to make lists and check said things off my lists. Decades ago, I would even lie in bed at night and rehearse in my mind the things that had gotten done that day! Thankfully, I no longer do this, nor...

Gomer- A Picture of God's Redemption

"'I will betroth you to Me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion. I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the Lord. In that day I will respond,' declares the Lord- 'I will respond to the skies, and they will respond to the earth; and the earth will respond to the grain, the new wine and the olive oil, and they will respond to Jezebel. I will plant her for Myself in the land; I will show my love to the one called "Not my loved one". I will say to those called "Not my people, You are My people"; and they will say, "You are my God"'.                                                                   Hosea 2:19-23 In the Old Testament, being a prophet of God was not for the faint of heart. This certainly was true for Hosea, who was a prophet to Judah...

Abigail- Her "Father's Joy"

"David said to Abigail, 'Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from avenging myself with my own hands.'"                                                           I Samuel 25:32-33 Godly wisdom and godly behavior matter. Together, they impact lives, families, and generations. The story of Abigail tells us that Abigail possessed both the wisdom from above and the behavior that corresponded to this wisdom. She is the only woman in the Hebrew Bible that is described as both beautiful and intelligent. Beyond her beauty and intelligence was a deep relationship with God (inner beauty) that enabled her to avert disaster and prophesy of the Davidic throne that was not yet in existence. Despite being married to an abusiv...

Rebekah- Mother of Two Nations

"The Lord said to her, 'Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger'".                                                                   Genesis 25:23 Rebekah is a woman who is very admired in the Hebrew Bible. She has prominence and is assertive, which breaks all the stereotypical norms of that culture and time.  She is bright and charming, and is not afraid to use her charm to benefit those she loves. Today, we would refer to her as fierce and courageous. Though some of her actions are definitely problematic in a spiritual sense, there are also those who view her boldness as a witness of the deep faith she has in God's promises. Her story begins in Genesis 24 where she has come to the well to ga...
